In a very succinct fashion, popular “Door Hostess” Dannette Hill discusses the issue of letting Steppers in parties for free. With all the egos, popularity, and years dancing, how do you decide who gets in for free. Let’s see if Dannette can help us out!
T. Pratt (TP): Hi Dannette, there’s been a lot of talk lately about Steppers not wanting to pay to get in parties. I immediately thought of you, because you’re like the “door lady” at a lot of popular parties in Chicago. Before we go on, tell the readers some of the parties you work or have worked.
Dannette Hill (DH): I’ve been a Door Hostess since 1999 and work for the following Stepper groups: Unique Connection, Elite Friends Network, Steel City Steppers, After 5ive Promotions, Just Friends, Strictly Steppers, Women In Motion, William Brown, Sam Chatman, Terrible Ted, Click Click, Men in Black w/Mary Shorter, Ladies of Unique Connection and Bolingbrook Connection.
TP: Do you find that a lot of Steppers feel that they should get into parties for free?
DH: YES!
TP: Does age factor in?
DH: NO!
That is to say, are the Steppers asking for a freebie usually younger or older?
DH: Both because it’s more related to their popularity or length of time they’ve been on the “stepping scene” instead of their age.
TP: Do you let any of the Steppers in free? If so, how do you decide who should come in for free and who should pay?
DH: Yes. The decision to allow a Stepper in free is determined by the policy of the group hosting the event. For example, a list at the door or verbal authorization.
TP: Are Steppers ever rude or mean to you at the door?
DH: YES! TP: How do you deal with them?
DH: I politely tell the individual I don’t make the rules, I follow them so the cover charge is what it is. If that’s not acceptable, then the security guy needs to handle the situation. (Laughing)
TP: Do you feel that Steppers should get a free pass because they’re popular or they’ve been dancing for a long time?
DH: No.
TP: In your opinion, are there benefits to letting some of the more popular Steppers in for free?
DH: No.
TP: What is your opinion on “Club Member” discounts?
DH: I think it’s a great idea because it allows the promoters to attend various parties to pass out their pluggers without paying full door price.
TP: Do you think that Steppers who want free admission or club member discounts take the promoter’s costs into consideration?
DH: Of course not! (Laughing)
TP: Is there a solution that would make both the Steppers and Promoters happy?
DH: A “possible” solution would be if a Promoter offers free admission or ½ price within 1st hour of event.
TP: It was great having you on ChiStepper.com. Any closing thoughts?
DH: Steppers should understand that a Door Hostess is hired by the group to collect money and tickets, therefore, it’s wrong of them to start drama. There are three options when they arrive ... Provide a ticket, pay the door price or leave. I will continue to be professional and maintain a rapport with everyone. Thank you Terrance, I felt honored that you requested to do an interview with me!
