Chicago's Largest Steppers Weekend Is Here

A packed crowd dances at last year's Chicago Largest

The Chicago’s Largest weekend kicks off tonight at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Matteson, with a pre party Meet and Greet. According to Steppin Luther, it’s a chance for out-of-towners to mingle and for contestants to come and warm up on the floor.

The Chicago’s Largest 5^th Annual Steppers contest takes place Saturday with $7,000 in cash prizes and their very first Master’s division championship. The couples eligible to compete are Kirk and Sebrina White, TaBoo and Nette, Ty Skippy and Celese, and Lawrence Parker (LP) and Danielle. Some have questioned TaBoo’s participation in the contest, as many thought that he was also an organizer of the contest. ChiStepper reached out to Steppin Luther about the contestant’s concerns and he said, “I am the sole promoter and CEO of the contest. I believe in fairness and TaBoo will not have any advantage over the other contestants. We have an independent panel of judges, who will pick the winners based on their performance.”

The Chicago’s Largest Steppers Contest is both a tribute to two incredible Steppers from Steppin’s original era, Lil Mike and Lil Alfred, and a style of dance that influenced the Steppin that is taking place today. To that end however, Steppin Luther says that they appreciate the dancers of today, and while the contest acknowledges the dancers of years past, it welcomes the generations currently among us. To that end, the contest has eliminated props and the splits from competition to create parity around the board.

I should also say that if you enjoy great music from the Original Steppin era, you DO NOT want to miss this party. My cell phone will be charged up with Shazam on cue. Last year DJ Dan played what is now my all time favorite Steppin record, Fazon by “Sopwith Camel.” Get ready, it’s going down tonight!
