  DJ Cross

DJ Cross’ ascession toward the top of the Steppin DJ throne has been a long one.  Cross’ humble beginnings in the Steppin world kicked off as the resident class DJ for Dre and Company.  At Dre and Company’s peak, when weekly classes averaged over 50 students, students were met with the sounds of DJ Cross putting it down live.  Cross also used his time under Dre and Company instructor Andre Blackwell to learn how to Step - a move that certainly didn’t hurt his sensitivity toward understanding great Steppers music.

Around 2006, following a major leg injury, Cross took a back seat for a minute.  His comeback event was Dre and Company’s farewell party in 2006, where Cross jammed but was so out of the loop that I spent a little time refreshing his music collection.   Upon Cross’ comeback however, he set his sights on loftier goals – to share his talents with the rest of the Steppin’ world.

While still rolling with Dre and Company and the Dyamond Divas at start up spots like The Press Box and Club Dyamonds, Cross displayed his talent on the national stage at the 2009 World’s Largest Pre Party.  Following this set, DJ Cross began popping up on major tickets all over the nation.    His style of play mimicked Mellow Khris in the sense that he was one of a very limited few DJ’s who could play incredibly well for both old and new skool crowds.  Not to mention, his skill set as a former house DJ, in an era of Steppin where the music was changing and blending was becoming popular, distanced him from a number of his contemporaries.

Cross’ musical talent, combined with his Steppin ability and infectious personality, are what allowed him to be the very first person in years, disc jockey or otherwise, to host a successful weekly set at DJ’s Lounge in Dolton.  This is especially astounding considering that Sunday Steppin for the new skool crowd belonged to Platinum 144 all summer.

When I stopped by this past Sunday DJ’s looked similar to Millenium 2000’s famous weekly Tuesday sets when the spot was called 3G’s.  And while I was impressed with the atmosphere of the newly renovated club (at last since the last time I’d been in there), Cross quickly admonished that due to the weather it was the slowest night that he’d seen yet.  The only DJ who has consistently been able to move Steppers from one venue to another is Sam Chatman.  Pretty soon it looks like we’ll have to add DJ Cross to that list.
