A few of Cali's sexiest divas showed up to have a good time

Another World’s Largest Weekend is behind us and based on the Facebook feedback I’ve been seeing, the weekend was a major success.  For those who couldn’t make it out to everything, we kicked the weekend off with a Skate Jam at Rich City Skate and it was great to see all of the Steppers get down on their wheels.  I’d been hearing for years that “Unique” Maurice Turner, Tom Catt, and Shonda were nice on their wheels and it proved to be true.  Other Steppers like Magic Mike, Dan Land, TaBoo, Pete Frazier, Nina Fletcher, Stacy Williams, Steppin Luther, Yahir, Feo Duncan, Snoop, Tamika Nash, Dorian Wright, Charles Newman, Tanya Harris, Sandra White, L. C. Henderson, Rose Wellington, Terrell Tyson, Michael Taylor, Cee, Donald, and Rich City Owner Mark Alexander all got down on the floor.

Friday, the Red Carpet Pre Party kicked off at 7pm with the VIP Reception.  Steppers munched on mini crab cakes, chicken quesadillas, basil shrimp skewers, beef empanadas, chicken chipotle rolls, and veggie spring roles, while sipping on red and white wine.  DJ Cross kicked the event off, followed by Mellow Khris, and then DJ Shorty Smooth.   The place was packed with well over 1,000 Steppers, who stayed until the music was shut off, and then a few headed to the Friday after party at Good Time Entertainment, although the after party Friday was light for the most part.

Saturday, Pete Frazier and the Gents hosted the World’s Largest Steppers Contest and rolled through the contest in nearly 2 ½ hours, including Chris Youngblood’s performance.   Stepper Feo Duncan said it was his favorite World’s Largest so far and it wasn’t only because he won first place.  A number of Steppers echoed his sentiments over the course of the next day and then on Facebook.  DJ Mellow Khris and DJ Cross did an incredible job playing the music and Eric “ET” Taylor also played for this event.  On Sunday morning, a groggy Pete Frazier was quite proud of the way the contest was ran.

I chatted with a few Steppers afterwards like Drew Alexander and Sharon Bolden, who told me they were extremely nervous before their performances.  Other Steppers like Royce Banks said he’d been doing it for so long that the nerves don’t affect him as much anymore.  One of the themes that emerged from the contest is the growing rivalry between Chicago and Detroit.  For years it was basically accepted that Chicago would dominate Steppin and now that the dance has spread across the nation, Steppers from other cities are making their bones in the dance.  Of course, off of the dance floor mostly everyone is friends, but the rivalry adds a nice competitive wrinkle to the contest and may suggest that the Out-of-Town Category is ready to be switched to an intermediate category, if not done away with all together.

The Contest ended with plenty of time for the after party.  We headed back to Good Time Entertainment and the place was jam packed with Steppers.  The club owner over their sucked to work with and nearly made our DJ, Roy Shannon walk out of the place.  This cat signed a contract to do a Steppers party but wanted club hip hop to be played every 4th song to accommodate a group of about 12 birthday party goers in the back.  Arrgghhh!  Luckily, when DJ Roy Shannon was taken off the box, the house DJ was none other than ClubSteppin.com's DJ Marcus Young.  I was relieved to discover this, because Marcus is my man as well and I was able to broker a deal with both the club owner, DJ Roy Shannon and DJ Marcus Young for both guys to play for the remainder of the night.  Aside from a couple of bad hip hop songs, the Steppin crowd had no clue what was going on.  We partied until 4am and called it a night.

Some of us finished up at The Press Box for a packed Steppers Day Party.  DJ Rodney Mack was smoking on the box, along with Black Cool who dropped a sexy remix of Wale’s “Lotus Flower Bomb.”  All of the champions walked in wearing their post contest glow and we partied from 12pm to 8pm before some headed down to DJ’s for Cross’ set and others headed to The Dorchester for Lil Punkin’s set.  On Monday morning I felt like I’d been hit by a semi truck, but it was all worth it.  See you next year!
