WLSC Original Old Skool and Walkers Prelims On FIRE

Ladies and gentlemen, after last night’s Original Old Skool and Walkers prelims, I’d argue that we are in for one of the best overall Steppers contests in the past 10 years. Steppers came out of the wood work for this contest, a few of whom I’d never seen before in life. If there were ever the thought of an Out-of-Town invasion, old skool Chicagoans have accepted the challenge. To that end, if the young phenom out of Detroit, Mr. Drew Alexander, who performed incredibly well by the way, thought he was going to breeze his way into the history books by blowing the competition out of the water, he can think again. While he still stands a very good chance dancing with Uneek, he will have his work cut out for him. The Original Old Skool Category is “STACKED” and whoever wins this year will have REAL bragging rights.

In a way, it sort of felt like Steppers came back to demonstrate what this dance is really about, and I haven’t been this excited about a World’s Largest Steppers Contest since 2001. Pete Frazier called me after the contest pumped up as well. He said that in the history of the Walkers Category he has never had this much participation. A whooping 18 or more couples will enter the Walking Category this year. Magic Mike said, “That article you wrote on me must have lit a fire under people’s ass, because a lot of people came out here to Walk tonight.”

I was happy to see everyone get out there last night, and some of highlights of the night for me included seeing George Hilliard and Sylvia Miller (George Macaroni’s old partner), Malik El Mir (Swan) and Stephanie come back, Peaches took to the floor with Diane Haywood, Drew got down with Uneek, Tyk Myn cut his retirement short to dance with Charnice Simmons, Bobby Taylor and Lady Margaret came out of retirement, James Harris came back with Tineka Wiley, Tony Dow flew in from L. A. and danced with his daughter Dominique Dow, Tyrone Austin did an incredible job dancing with Newt Howard, Reginald Hunt and Andrea (Just Us) got down, Smoke Dixon and Cheryl Powe kept it nice and sexy, Lawrence threw down with Tina Wilson, and Pharis Henderson and Lisa probably got the loudest applause of the night.

The Walkers Category was contested equally strong. Two-time repeating Walkers champ Drew Alexander, who has hands full this year, did an incredible job dancing with Sharon Bolden. I also liked Sherry’s Gordorn’s partner Ed Donaldson, who I’d never seen before. There were so many incredible couples in the Walkers Category. The full list of contestants is below …
